Southwell House Youth Project (SHYP) is an organisation which works with young people directly, responding to their social, personal and spiritual needs through a range of courses covering issues and skills. We also work with adults who work with and for young people, through support, resourcing and training.  The Project is a work of the Jesuits in Britain, and was established by them in 1988 as a service to the young people of  London, the rest of Britain and even overseas, and to those who work with them.

Most of our work is with groups of young people who come to our project from schools, parishes, and youth organisations for a programme which maybe for one day or residentially for up to a week.   We also run programmes in schools and other places.  Each programme is individually designed after consultation with the young people concerned and with their staff.   There are also some programmes which are open to any young person who wishes to come.

The Project is situated in a large Victorian house situated in Hampstead, north-west London and stands in its own beautiful gardens. The house offers a warm, friendly and colourful environment much appreciated by all those who come here. We are within walking distance of a number of London Underground stations and also have some off-street parking. The staff are collectively committed to ensuring that those who come to the project are welcomed and enjoy their time to the full.

We have a resident team of nine youthworkers, all of whom are either qualified youth workers, qualified teachers, or who are working towards such qualifications.  We run a variety of programmes, which may be in our own centre, or in other places, programmes which we have designed and offer to anyone who may be interested, or which are designed for a particular group in consultation with its staff or leaders.  See the links in the left-hand panel for more information.

As well as running programmes for young people both here in our own centre and in schools, parishes, and other youth centres in London and often further afield, we offer our premises for use by conferences and groups to run their own training and other programmes.  We provide a friendly and well-equipped centre for residential groups of up to 24 adults or up to about 50 young people, or for day conferences of up to 55 people, with a variety of facilities, discussion rooms, and layout.  Please consult the section on running a conference here.

We make every effort to accommodate those with disability. There is ramp access to the house, front and rear, and there are specially adapted ground floor toilet, shower and bedrooms. We also have a portable loop system for deaf and partially hearing clients.

Out of respect for busy people we have not included photographs, except of the conference facilities, nor graphics except for our logo and the maps.   We hope you find the information you need quickly! For more information look at the links on the left-hand side of this page.
